Frequently asked questions
When you join the University of Essex, you join for life. You become part of a global family: a creative, diverse community that's engaged and kind, where everyone is equal. The Essex community reaches far beyond the boundaries of the university's campuses. They support each other, they live and learn together, they disagree agreeably – and they develop interests and embrace values that change their lives and careers forever.
Guaranteed on-campus accommodation is offered for all first-year students, plus the option to lock-in your accommodation for the duration of your course. Your accommodation is more than just a room – it's your place to connect and thrive, make friends for life, and embrace the moments that make you. There's a wide range of accommodation available across the Colchester and Southend campuses, many with en-suite bathroom facilities. The university also offers single gender flats, adapted rooms, self-contained accommodation for single or double occupancy, shared twin en suite rooms, and studios.
The centre of the Colchester Campus is buzzing with life. From its weekly street market to international cultural celebrations, it’s a vibrant hub bringing together students and staff from over 140 countries. You can watch a film at the on-campus cinema, Cine10, compete in a pub quiz at one of the student bars, enjoy a show at the Lakeside Theatre, or dance the night away at Sub Zero, the on-campus nightclub. At the Southend Campus, the SU Lounge is great for catching up on reading, settling down with your laptop or just relaxing with a good book. Make the most of being in the city centre and find yourself a cosy corner in your favourite cafe to crack on with some work with a cappuccino.
