Open days at University of South Wales

University of South Wales (USW) is the second largest university in Wales in terms of its student numbers and offers around 200 undergraduate and postgraduate courses. It was formed in 2013 from the merger of the University of Glamorgan and the University of Wales, Newport.

USW is a vocationally focused university, preparing students to support key industries now, and in the future. Employers work closely with USW to co-create a curriculum that supports their future needs.

It has been awarded the title of Cyber University of the Year for four consecutive years.

Facilities

Industry-standard facilities include a crime scene training facility, a clinical simulation centre, design and photography studios and the USW Sports Park.

Each campus has cafés on site and a library that offers a range of resources, including books, journals, digital resources, PCs and Wi-Fi.

Why go to an open day?

When you attend an open day, you'll get a gut feeling about the university. Open days will help give you clarity if you're not sure what course to choose. You'll be able to visit different departments and chat with lecturers and other department staff, there are often subject talks too. You'll also get to speak to current students. They can tell you whether they're satisfied with the teaching, what the local nightlife is like, what the best halls of residence are – pretty much anything. Don't forget to look at the accommodation for yourself and make time to walk around the surrounding area to see if you like it.

Where is it located?

The university has three main faculties across its campuses in South Wales all in and around Cardiff. The Faculty of Creative Industries is based at the Cardiff Campus, along with a smaller number of courses from the Faculty of Business and Society. It is city based so easy to reach by public transport. Sport Park in Pontypridd is the university's largest campus. You can get there by car or train, the nearest station being Treforest Estate.

The university's newest campus is in Newport overlooking the River Usk. It's easy to get to by train and is a 10-minute walk from Newport station.

Cardiff is a vibrant city with a thriving social scene, great shopping, world class sport and culture. It was recently declared the UK's first music city and is known for being an affordable place to live. It's also a great place for foodies, with plenty of independent restaurants and cafes to try. Look out for the regular street food pop-ups and markets.
