Course summary

On our Secondary Computer Science PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) you'll get hands-on experience teaching on placement and develop your knowledge of the secondary school curriculum on campus. Children are adept with technology. But youll help them understand the code, algorithms and operating systems behind the screen. Weve designed this course to help you understand how to support secondary aged children. Youll develop the skills you need to make sure young people enjoy learning. Throughout your training, youll get hands-on experience on placement. Youll also join study sessions to explore misconceptions in computer science, programming, lesson planning and more. And after you pass the course, youll be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). This means you can apply for teaching roles across the country.Our Secondary Computer Science PGCE lasts for one academic year, from September until the end of June. This school-led course includes an induction to prepare you for your placement and weekly face-to-face sessions at the University to develop your knowledge of the curriculum and subject-specific pedagogy. You will also undertake 20 Intensive Training and Practice (ITaP) days focused on foundational areas of learning to further develop your practice in the classroom.CareersWith a PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), youll be ready to teach computer science in schools across England.Most of our graduates secure their first teaching position while on the PGCE, with many of them securing roles within our partnership schools.After youve completed this course, you can join our Masters in Education. Your PGCE gives you Masters credits which means youll be fast tracked and can complete this course by the end of your second year of teaching.
