Course summary

The MSc Data Science and Econometrics will give you an understanding of both econometrics and machine learning approaches for data analysis. It will enhance your ability to implement the econometric methods in the context of big data with the technical and practical skills to analyse the big data in financial markets and economics.

The rate at which we can create data is rapidly accelerating. According to IBM, globally, we currently produce over 2.5 quintillion bytes of data a day. These enormous quantities of data can have a considerable impact on our economy and hold the key to success in areas such as business and marketing.

Why study MSc Data Science and Econometrics

  • You鈥檒l learn the fundamental skills of Data Science, including the mathematical foundations of statistics and statistical analysis, data mining, programming, data visualisation and machine learning.
  • You鈥檒l combine this with the computational techniques needed to efficiently analyse very large data sets that we usually encounter in economics and finance.
  • You鈥檒l join the next generation of data scientists, graduating with in-demand skills, combining statistical and data analysis with computing.
  • You鈥檒l apply your learning through real-world data examples that are specific to economics, finance, business and management.
  • You鈥檒l analyse trends in economies, make financial predictions, extracting valuable information to inform policy, economic and financial decision-making.
  • This degree is interdisciplinary, and you'll learn from experts in the Department of Computing and the Institute of Management Studies. Many faculty members bring their knowledge from active research and consultancy in a wide range of sectors.
  • We have close links with industry professionals, and regularly invite guest speakers to deliver lectures throughout the year.
  • You鈥檒l put your learning into practice through a final major project focussing on your specialist area of interest. You鈥檒l carry out original analysis on real-world data in the areas of economics, finance or business.
  • You鈥檒l use industry-standard software such as Apache, Hadoop, R and Spark to analyse economic and financial data.

Pathways

As well as MSc Data Science and Econometrics, we have the following pathway options that give you the chance to specialise in a particular industry area. For each MSc Data Science pathway, in addition to the pathway-specific skills, you鈥檒l learn core skills that are essential for data scientists such as statistical analysis, programming, machine learning, data visualisation, and big data technologies.

In collaboration with Goldsmiths Institute of Management Studies, you鈥檒l learn the skills to become the next generation of data science experts in sectors ranging from healthcare to business.

Prepare yourself for a career in data science

We carefully designed our data science programme to help you to become successful data science professionals. Core modules provide you with a solid grounding in the theory of big data, statistics, machine learning and the pathway domain. We train you on the latest methods and techniques across various modules so that you can be an important resource for different organizations as a data scientist and engineer. The programme provides you with the opportunity to learn the core techniques and further, it enhances your learning through lab sessions. The lab sessions are going to help you to build hands-on experience on data sets from economics and finance and on data science tools prior to your graduation.
