1. An old and essential profession

Midwifery is a very noble field of medicine that has been around for thousands of years. Midwives are arguably some of the most important people in women鈥檚 healthcare. A career in this area could see you supporting countless mothers and their children from early pregnancy to well after birth.

2. Good graduate prospects

This is a very vocational subject area. Graduate data for Midwifery show that a high portion of students find professional employment or continue their studies within 15 months of graduating. Starting salaries can be pretty good, too.

3. Plenty of practical learning

Degree courses in Midwifery have a good mixture of theoretical learning and practical experiences. You鈥檒l spend a lot of time on placements where you work alongside healthcare professionals treating patients.

On your first placement you鈥檒l just be observing, but by the end of your degree you鈥檒l be doing all of the work yourself (under supervision).

4. Career progression

Midwives have plenty of opportunity for growth in their careers. Options include specialising in a specific area, working on different hospital units such as a high-dependency ward, or pursuing a managerial or research role. Work your way up the ladder to become a consultant midwife, and you can expect quite a high salary.

5. Other healthcare routes

Most midwives continue in the profession for their whole career. However, the skills you gain during your training and practice can be transferred to several other healthcare professions. You could become a community health worker, care worker, nurse, learning disability specialist, family project worker or psychologist, for example.

6. Globally recognised skills

Hundreds and thousands of babies are born every day, and midwives are needed worldwide. If you鈥檙e interested in working in a different country, your skills could help you secure a professional role as a midwife overseas.
