Course summary
The Law and Welsh LLB program is challenging and exciting and gives you the opportunity to gain the skills needed for a career in law and a wide variety of professions. In addition to the foundation modules which include the academic training stage required to become a solicitor or barrister in England and Wales, referred to as the 'Law Degree Degree', we offer a wide range of optional areas of study covering traditional and contemporary legal topics. The program is taught jointly by the schools of Welsh, Law and Politics, giving you the opportunity to study in depth in both disciplines.
Our degree allows you to complete academic periods of training to become a barrister or solicitor and to progress straight to the vocational training periods for the legal profession in England and Wales: the Professional Bar Training Course or the Course Legal Practice. We are the only Russell Group University to offer both of these courses, which means you have the option of staying with us in Cardiff to complete all your legal education. The Legal Practice Course has regularly received the Solicitors Regulation Authority / Law Society's highest rating.
The devolution of the Welsh Government and the introduction of the Welsh Language Act have made the ability to speak and understand Welsh to a high level attractive to employers. Studying in Cardiff is an opportunity to benefit from socially relevant research that contributes to the development of the Welsh language in the twenty-first century.
Learning and assessment
You will learn mainly through a combination of lectures, tutorials and seminars, although your Welsh modules will also offer the opportunity to join language workshops and classes.
The lectures vary in form but generally provide a broad structure for each subject, presenting key concepts and current knowledge. You will also have access to audio versions of Law lectures.
In tutorials you will have the opportunity to discuss specific themes or topics, to reinforce and feedback your individual learning and to develop oral presentation skills. Your communication skills will be developed in tutorials, where you will make individual contributions to group studies, for example, by summarizing a specific award or article for the group.
You will practice and develop your presentation, legal and intellectual skills by taking part in a variety of learning activities. These include legal problem solving, small group discussions, debates, motions, oral presentations, independent research tasks and written assignments. You will also improve your team working skills.
Career prospects
The Law
In 2015/16, 97% of the School's graduates who were available for work reported that they were in employment and / or further study within six months of graduating.
Students who chose to work immediately after graduation secured positions as negotiators, paralegals, remortgage handlers and solicitors with firms such as Hugh James Solicitors, Admiral Law, Eversheds LLP and NHS Wales Legal and Risk Services.
A law degree does not restrict graduates to careers in the legal profession. Every year many law graduates enter professions as diverse as finance, sales and marketing, digital communications and recruitment.
School of Welsh
Due to the demand for Welsh speakers, a degree in Welsh provides a valuable qualification for posts that require bilingual personnel. Many of our graduates are now pursuing careers in law, government, media, performing arts, administration, and education at all levels.
In 2015/16, 100% of the School's graduates who were available for work reported that they were in employment and / or further study within six months of graduating.
