Course summary

Take your first step towards a career in the construction industry. You'll learn how to organise and manage project finances on this quantity surveying course.

Quantity surveyors are the cost managers of the construction industry. While studying for a recognised degree, youll learn how quantity surveyors organise, control and manage the costing of projects, including:

building economics

contracts and construction law

construction technology

project management

As part of this quantity surveying course, youll:

Undertake individual and group assessments and develop core skills

Build analytical, arithmetic and IT abilities

Develop as an innovative team player with the problem solving and transferable skills needed to succeed

Gain the confidence and skills to tackle difficult contractual situations and negotiations

Develop an industry perspective on contemporary issues in the field

Professional recognition
This course is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Graduates are eligible for full membership of RICS. This will be following an acceptable period of approved professional practice and a successful final assessment of professional competence by RICS.

Teaching & Learning

Independent study is a crucial part of learning at university and you will be required to undertake many hours of self-directed research and reading, and preparation and writing of assessments. Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to the specialist learning and study-skill resources. Youll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.

Quantity surveyors are in demand both in the UK and worldwide. We'll provide you with the guidance and industry contacts to help launch your career after graduation. Whether you choose to work on-site for a construction company, or in an office environment with a consultancy firm, a rewarding career with excellent opportunities in the field of built environment will be open to you. Upon graduation, you'll be qualified to work in a wide range of commercial or private practice organisations. You'll also have the option of further study and could undertake one of our range of master's degrees, including our MSc Quantity Surveying Commercial Management or MSc Project Management.
