Course summary

From nuclear physics to sustainable energy applications, our Physics with Renewable Energy programme combines a solid grounding in core physics concepts with exciting exploration of cutting-edge topics in renewable energy. With core professional, practical and employability skills embedded throughout the curriculum and opportunities to solve real-world problems - using Keeles own on-campus renewables and smart energy network - you will graduate with a toolkit of skills to enter a growing job market with diverse career options in industries such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, and bioenergy.

Course overview

Physics is a fundamental science but with far-reaching applications to other areas and a range of industries such as those focused on power, nuclear, electronics, IT, data-mining, telecommunications and medical diagnostics. As a physicist you could play a crucial role in designing and managing the global transition that must take place from a fossil-fuelled world to one powered by low-carbon and renewable energy.

Based on a solid foundational core of physics concepts and key expectations, as defined by the Institute of Physics (IoP) accreditation framework, you will apply these skills to the generation, transmission and storage of low-carbon power, engaging with frontier material informed by the interests of our world-class research teams.

Work placements

In an increasingly competitive job market, employers are seeking to recruit employees who have high-level knowledge, skills and an understanding of the workplace. In between year two and three of your studies, you can spend time gaining practical experience with a physics-focused company or organisation. This will enable you to apply the skills and theories you have learnt to real situations in the industrial workplace. You will also enhance your employability skills in the presentation and communication of data, the writing of reports, and the ability to work independently, and as part of a team. Work experience in your area of interest will not only demonstrate your commitment and passion, but will also enable you to make meaningful connections by networking with experts in the field.

Foundation year

Our Foundation Year provides an excellent alternative route to Keele, providing a unique opportunity to better prepare for your chosen degree, and with guaranteed entry onto your undergraduate course once you successfully complete your Foundation Year.

This extra year of study can improve your academic skills, expand your subject knowledge, give you a better understanding of higher education and, perhaps most importantly of all, build your confidence.

Your future career

95% of Keele students are in employment or further study within 15 months of finishing their studies (HESA Graduate Outcomes, 2019/20)

With increased focus on climate change and demand for clean energy, it's an exciting time to pursue a career in renewables.
On successful completion of this programme you will develop a variety of transferable skills including computer programming, the application of numerical methods to solve problems mathematically, the ability to design and execute original scientific investigations and to report the results in diverse ways to a variety of audiences.
