Course summary

Why Nursing (Learning Disabilities)?

Our Nursing (Learning Disabilities) degree will prepare you for a rewarding career, putting the health and wellbeing of people with learning disabilities first. Our programme has been developed in partnership with key professional organisations within the NHS, the private and voluntary sectors, along with carers and service users. These strong links in our local communities mean that you’ll be able to build your abilities and knowledge by working with a range of people experienced in providing and using frontline services. You’ll also benefit from state-of-the-art nursing facilities on campus, including versatile clinical rooms and a 'teaching house' where you can practice learning disabilities nursing skills in a simulated community setting. As well as covering topics such as responding to the needs of people with autistic spectrum conditions and shared decision making in learning disabilities care, our degree places a strong emphasis on leadership and developing a ‘culture of care’ throughout. This means you’ll learn how to effectively look after your own health and wellbeing so you can properly care for others. You’ll therefore graduate equipped with the tools and values needed to become an effective and innovative healthcare professional and a leading advocate for the rights of people with learning disabilities.
