Course summary

Course overview

BEng in Mechanical Engineering is a direct route to university. You will learn a range of modules including Thermofluids and Engineering Principles. These will be taught at a high level allowing you to develop transferable skills, essential for your future engineering career. Your studies will include Higher National (HN) units on mechanical engineering subjects which will broaden your knowledge of the mechanical engineering industry. In year 1 you will study the HNC in Mechanical Engineering and in year 2 the HND before progressing to the third year of the BEng in Mechanical Engineering at Heriot-Watt University. You must also study the additional Heriot-Watt mathematics alongside your normal studies, which covers the first two years of their mathematics content.

This course combines advanced engineering techniques with hands-on learning. You will learn essential skills required to solve mechanical engineering problems in a wide variety of industries such as traditional energy, renewable energy, manufacturing, transport and materials.

This is a full-time course taught at Edinburgh Colleges Midlothian campus. The course is taught by teaching staff with extensive industry experience using the latest technologies. You will be taught between classrooms and workshops and will gain essential and hands-on experience in the engineering sector. This course is intended to meet the needs of employers and further education.

How the course is assessed

You will be assessed on each unit

At the end of the first year, you will sit a three hour written graded unit 1 examination based on the knowledge that you have learnt through your year 1 studies and will be awarded an A, B or C grade.

Throughout year two you will also complete a graded unit 2 project where you will build or improve a mechanical device, which like your graded unit 1 will be awarded an A, B or C grade. Most Universities expect you to achieve at least a B grade in each of the above units, although some expect you to achieve A grades.

All units within the course must be achieved in order to gain the full award
