You will benefit from working with academics and their groups operating at the cutting-edge of their discipline – you will quickly become an expert yourself and learn how to become an independent researcher capable of designing and carrying out your own research. In addition you will learn how to work in teams, gain technical expertise, develop your skills of critical analysis and learn how to present scientific data in an accessible form through writing and oral presentation within the department and at conferences.
PhD Programme structure
This degree programme has been developed by leading universities of the national NewRoutePhD Consortium in response to a demand for PhD students who have both breadth and depth. The student undertakes taught courses during the first year (gaining a MRes award at the end of year one) while gradually increasing the amount of time spent on full-time research to 100% by the end of year two. As well as submitting a PhD thesis to the same standard as usual, the student will gain both generic skills to improve their research and professional skills individually tailored to their needs.
