Course summary

By studying towards a PhD in a biological discipline you will gain training at the cutting edge of your chosen field giving you not only exceptional practical skills but also the ability to plan and manage a project, critically evaluate data and communicate your findings to a wider audience through both oral and written means. As an alternative to the standard PhD you can undertake an Integrated PhD. This four-year programme includes a number of taught units to further increase your range of skills.

Research themes: Cell and developmental biology, Evolution and biodiversity, Infection and immunity, Medical and industrial biotechnology.

What will I learn?

The great strength of the department is its academic breadth with specialisms including: Biodiversity, Evolution, Cell and developmental biology, Infection and immunity Molecular structure and function, Neuroscience, Plant sciences

You will benefit from working with academics and their groups operating at the cutting-edge of their discipline – you will quickly become an expert yourself and learn how to become an independent researcher capable of designing and carrying out your own research. In addition you will learn how to work in teams, gain technical expertise, develop your skills of critical analysis and learn how to present scientific data in an accessible form through writing and oral presentation within the department and at conferences.

PhD Programme structure

This degree programme has been developed by leading universities of the national NewRoutePhD Consortium in response to a demand for PhD students who have both breadth and depth. The student undertakes taught courses during the first year (gaining a MRes award at the end of year one) while gradually increasing the amount of time spent on full-time research to 100% by the end of year two. As well as submitting a PhD thesis to the same standard as usual, the student will gain both generic skills to improve their research and professional skills individually tailored to their needs.
