Course summary

Understand the human geographical processes that are shaping our rapidly changing world.

Course overview

Human geographical enquiry provides insights into the processes that shape our social and natural environments, and the relationships within and between them. Examine global geographical challenges and the spatial dynamics of human behaviour including migration, exclusion, health, sustainability, geopolitics, and changing places. Explore first-hand the principles of sustainable practice alongside the ways in which digital technologies are reshaping society, space and place. Participate in innovative and engaging approaches to learning to ensure that you have opportunity to develop your knowledge and the key transferable skills expected by today鈥檚 employers. Our students are 100% satisfied with our geography courses (NSS, 2020).

Why study this course with us?

Our course is designed to give you experiences and understanding that set you up for life and work beyond your degree by focusing on the contemporary issues facing human societies. We equip you with the specialist skills to investigate these issues through practical application and experiential learning. We do this well - achieving 100% overall student satisfaction for Geography in the 2020 National Student Survey.

The flexibility of the course allows you to specialise in human geography sub-disciplines, but you also have the option to study complementary content that draws on the physical side of the discipline - so that your geography course is tailored to your interests. Opportunities for travel to a variety of fieldwork destinations in the UK and abroad, plus virtual fieldwork, will enhance your understanding of places and spaces while this form of learning allows you to apply social science and digital research methods, including GIS.

On graduation, you will have a wide range of skills and knowledge required for graduate employment, having had the opportunity to gain hands-on work experience, to participate in national and international fieldwork excursions, and learn from academics and practitioners who are experts in their field.

Assessment

Most of the assessment is through continuous coursework assignments, complemented by some end-of-module examinations. The Department engages in a wide variety of innovative coursework assignments, including podcasting, oral presentations/posters, briefing papers, consultancy reports and essays.

Job prospects

The knowledge, skills and understanding you will gain during the course will allow you to pursue a wide range of careers. Our graduates work in professions across a range of sectors, including environmental management, consultancy, teaching, town planning, renewable energy, sustainability, flood risk management and surveying. Some of our graduates continue their studies and go on to gain PhDs, Master's degrees and professional qualifications.
