Do you want to combine practical filmmaking skills with the ability to critically analyse film in a range of contexts?

From filmmaking to film criticism, digital content creation, film festival programming, archival curation, and more, this BA (Hons) Film degree provides you with the comprehensive knowledge and skills needed for employment in the screen industries, and beyond.

Formerly known as ‘BA Film and TV Production, this degree is taught by Northumbrias leading film practitioners, theoreticians, and historians – all bringing research to life in your workshops, lectures, and seminars.

The BA Film combines theory and practice: you will make your own film projects, from dramas and documentaries to music and experimental films, while also exploring the impact of film on society and culture.

This degree is dynamic, interdisciplinary, and addresses real world challenges, all while equipping you for your career in industry.

How does this course prepare me for my future career?

Graduates of this course will be equipped with a hybrid knowledge of important issues that shape our lives, and the skills to express their critical ideas in practical film projects and academic writing.

On completion you will be well placed to move into a career as a producer, editor, director, screen writer, critic, or researcher. Graduates from the department include directors of photography, Lol Crawley (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Four Lions, Utopia 2), and Si Bell (Ripper Street, Peaky Blinders, The Serpent), directors, Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game of Thrones,Westworld) and Chris Foggin (Fishermen's Friends, Bank Of Dave), and screenwriter Sean Conway (Ray Donovan, All I See is You, World War Z).

You can find other alumni on TV shows such as Peepshow and Cuckoo (Emma Lawson), This is England 90, Wolfblood, Ripper Street, and craft roles in features like Prometheus and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Whatever you decide to do, you will have strong employability as a result of having acquired the skills of critical reflection, entrepreneurship, collaboration and curiosity, and the ability to apply your knowledge to solve practical film-making problems in ways that are sustainable and ethical.
