Course summary
This course gives you the opportunity to study English in combination with another language. The Department of English is home to internationally renowned writers and critics, and theres a strong research culture, creating a learning environment that is both supportive and intellectually challenging. And with our extensive cultural links both in Manchester and further afield, youll be in the right place to begin building a creative network for your future. This course takes an innovative, modern approach to literature, focusing on drama, prose, fiction and poetry from the 17th century to the present – balancing the traditional with the modern. Flexibility is key to our approach and as your course progresses youll be able to choose course units to suit your own particular interests, such as creative writing, film and cultural theory. Or why not focus geographically and culturally on writing from the USA, Ireland, Africa, India and the Caribbean In this degree you will also take a number of units relating to your chosen modern language. Adding a modern language to your degree means you can develop as a more effective communicator, acquire linguistic skills and develop a wider cultural awareness. You can choose from French, Spanish, Modern Standard Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, and Japanese.
Career prospects
A language and English focused degree allows you to learn many transferable skills that can be used in a multitude of jobs, media work, teaching, translation and interpreting are popular pathways. Adding a language, whatever you choose it to be, makes you stand out in applications. The economic, business and diplomatic opportunities provided by the languages we offer will give you a competitive edge in the jobs market. Languages graduates are also sought after in many different industries, with recent graduates being offered positions in a variety of different sectors both in the UK and abroad. Recent English graduates have become school and college teachers, and some have gained employment in fields as diverse as banking, finance, manufacturing and retail.
There is also the opportunity to engage in further study and professional training. There are a number of postgraduate degrees graduates of this programme could progress to including MA Applied Linguistics, which has two specialisms, one in English language and one in TESOL, MA English Studies, with specialisms in gothic studies and postcolonial studies, MA Publishing or MA/MFA Creative Writing.
