Course summary
Literature is powerful. Ever thought about how a book can change society?Studying English is a way of thinking about today鈥檚 world, including vital political issues such as race, climate, gender and sexuality. At Sussex, you鈥檒l be taught by expert researchers with knowledge of literature through centuries of history and across the globe. You鈥檒l explore a diverse range of texts and voices. In the School of Media, Arts and Humanities, you鈥檒l become part of a friendly community of students and academics.On this course, you:- study big themes, periods and genres of literature- focus on individual authors in detail- take electives from other subjects 鈥� from video games to sustainability and social justice 鈥� to open your mind to other disciplines and tailor your degree to your interests- explore how literary criticism connects with other disciplines, such as philosophy or anthropology, and political movements, such as feminism, anti-colonialism and LGBTQ liberation.You鈥檒l also have the opportunity to experiment with your own writing, supported by our experts. They have links with the creative industries, as well as literary events such as the poetry series Placeholder and the festival The Coast is Queer. You鈥檒l:- work with unique archive material from The Keep, including Virginia Woolf鈥檚 letters- go on field trips to locations such as Monk鈥檚 House and Shakespeare鈥檚 Globe- be encouraged to attend regular events for students and staff- have the opportunity to publish your work on our in-house typography press. Brighton is a stimulating arts and media hub, and you鈥檒l enjoy easy access to London. You鈥檒l be in a great location for professional placement opportunities and career inspiration. When you graduate, you鈥檒l have skills including critical analysis, written communication, independent thinking, self-motivation and problem-solving.
