Course summary
Enhance your knowledge of history and literature in English by studying them together on this English and History degree. You could study the novels of Jane Austen alongside the history of the naval wars at the time she wrote. Or, you could study African literature to gain a different perspective on the history of the modern city. You can also spend a semester or a summer at one of our global partner universities.History at Southampton covers the ancient world to the present day. Our English modules explore writing from around the world and its connection to politics, the arts, identity and more. We are ranked 6th in the UK for English research quality in the Complete University ´óÏó´«Ã½, 2024.Partnerships with Chawton House, owned by Jane Austen’s family and now home to a unique collection of women’s writing, and the John Hansard will give you unrivalled access to archives and artworks. You will also have access to one of the largest Jewish document centres in Europe, the Parkes Archive. Our Digital Humanities facilities will allow you to study and research through cutting edge technology, such as virtual reality, 3D scanners and printers, and a 360 degree fully immersive audio-visual centre.
