Course summary
Overview
We are now offering a new PhD in Creative Practice in Architecture available to practicing architects. Research training is offered at bi-annual design symposia within the School. The final assessment is via a portfolio of design work of original composition presented as an exhibition with an accompanying written commentary of 40,000-50,000 words prepared for the viva voce examination. This programme is aimed at design professionals who wish to advance their discipline through the act of practice and within the workplace. Its aim is to encourage and enable those who are at the forefront of creative practice to undertake research through design focusing on specialisms developed through practice and to fill the current void of doctoral-level practitioners in the discipline.
Distinctive features
- Candidates are expected to be in employment and the work that they are carrying out there counts as work for the PhD.
- Candidates will have a good first and second degree in Architecture (commonly known as Part 1 and 2).
- Applications must be supported by a portfolio of design work carried out in practice and demonstrating achievement, a maturing set of core skills and a developing ‘position’ in terms of design philosophy and approaches.
- A minimum of three years in practice will be required.
