Course summary

Overview

Our joint honours course allows students to pursue their own areas of interest within Communication, Media & Culture and Sociology whilst also providing them with a solid foundation in the discipline and a range of personal and professional skills which will serve as a springboard for their future career development. The programme is carefully designed to enable students to gradually develop their knowledge and skills and to become autonomous, effective and independent learners.

Communication, Media & Culture is about understanding interpersonal connections between individuals, groups and corporations who construct their identities by means of new media and social interaction, persuasion and propaganda, journalism and branding. Sociology is a wide-ranging subject concerned with analysing social relationships and social institutions and the ways in which they shape people鈥檚 lives.

Learning and assessment

In your first year, you鈥檒l gain a key understanding of communications, digital culture and the media. You鈥檒l explore social processes such as gender socialisation, urbanisation and education from competing theoretical perspectives.

In your second year, you鈥檒l begin to specialise, following your own interests in power dynamics in society or gender and race in the media. You can develop practical expertise by building a website, or filming and broadcasting a news bulletin. You鈥檒l learn about racism through the lens of housing, policing, migration and you鈥檒l analyse different aspects of global social change and its varying consequences.

In final year, you鈥檒l have the freedom to focus on what you care about most, including your dissertation subject. You鈥檒l also be able to gain applicable experience in areas like branding, journalism and podcasting and consider topics such as the social impact of emergent technologies.
