Course summary
Overview
Our joint honours course allows students to pursue their own areas of interest within Communication, Media & Culture and English Literature whilst also providing them with a solid foundation in the discipline and a range of personal and professional skills which will serve as a springboard for their future career development. The programme is carefully designed to enable students to gradually develop their knowledge and skills and to become autonomous, effective and independent learners.
Communication, Media & Culture is about understanding interpersonal connections between individuals, groups and corporations who construct their identities by means of new media and social interaction, persuasion and propaganda, journalism and branding. English Literature offers students the opportunity to study British and world literatures through a model of progressive specialisation that teaches advanced literary critical skills in the context of periodised, thematised, formal and theoretical modules.
Learning and assessment
In your first year, you鈥檒l gain an understanding of communications, digital culture and the media. You鈥檒l also develop your critical, analytical and specialist writing skills. You鈥檒l build the understanding you need for undergraduate literary studies with modules in critical theory and global literatures.
In your second year, you鈥檒l broaden and deepen your knowledge of literature in relation to movements and cultures past and present. You鈥檒l begin to specialise, following your own interests in power dynamics in society or gender and race in the media. You can also develop practical expertise by building a website, or filming and broadcasting a news bulletin.
In your final year you鈥檒l have the freedom to focus on what you care about most, including your dissertation subject. You can explore literary topics like urbanisation, utopian societies, artificial intelligence, sustainability or even witchcraft. You鈥檒l also develop your talent as a presenter, team-worker, writer and thinker. You鈥檒l be able to gain applicable experience in areas like branding, journalism and podcasting.
