Course summary

This course provides an introductory exploration of our planets stunning biodiversity and the evolutionary processes behind them. You will explore a variety of topics which will prepare you for a career in zoology ranging from ecology, animal behaviour, animal welfare, genetics and evolution. Successful completion of this course will set you up to moving onto the optional top-up year where you will investigate and discuss some more in-depth topics such as the role of Zoos and Aquaria in the 21st Century as well as explore some of the modern methods used across a variety of zoological disciplines.

We offer a range of facilities that you will use throughout your studies, including our extensive estate of farmland, our Animal Welfare Centre, which houses over 137 different species from a variety of taxonomic groups and our biosciences laboratory, where you will undertake activities such as microscopy, dissection, genetic analyses and morphometry.

What will you learn?

You鈥檒l develop an understanding of animal biology, health, husbandry, behaviour and genetics, and gain an appreciation for animal law and ethics. Industry experience forms an integral part of the course, and you will be encouraged to establish connections with industry and undertake your own research project in a related area in your second year.

How will I be assessed?

The course is assessed through a rage of assessments including written assignments, poster presentations, seminar presentations, portfolios, exams and project work. The course is mostly assessed through individual assessments, but elements of group work may be incorporated to bring in a real-world learning experience.

Our variety of assessment methods, providing students with an increased chance of success, have been commended by external examiners.
